Michael Jackson is moonwalking into the history books all over again.

The King of Pop’s big-screen biopic ‘Michael’ has officially crossed $1 billion at the global box office, becoming the first biopic ever to reach the coveted milestone.

Per Variety, the film has drummed up $371.8 million domestically and $629.8 million overseas, bringing its worldwide tally to $1.001 billion.

Led by Jaafar Jackson in his acting debut, the Antoine Fuqua-directed picture has powered past expectation after expectation since its April release. Along the way, it became the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, topping ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ and the biggest film ever centered on a real person, surpassing ‘Oppenheimer.’

It is also now the biggest release in Lionsgate history and the studio’s first film to cross $1 billion globally. Quite the feat for a project some questioned before it even hit theaters.

Fuqua celebrated the milestone with a statement that underscored the scale of the moment.

He gushed:

“Reaching this extraordinary $1 billion milestone with Michael is a deeply humbling moment that celebrates the tireless dedication of our incredible producers, cast, crew, and partners. This achievement belongs to everyone who came together with a shared vision to honor one of the greatest artists the world has ever known. With Colman Domingo and Nia Long also starring as Joe and Katherine Jackson, ‘Michael’ has proven to be more than a movie moment. It is a box office phenomenon.

And with Lionsgate expected to greenlight at least one more film about Jackson’s life, the King of Pop looks to be “startin’ somethin'” seismic with this cinematic chapter.
