Aaliyah’s legacy continues to shine nearly 25 years after her untimely passing, and – thanks to the 2026 Essence Fest – the iconic late singer will get a long overdue, star-studded tribute in her honor.

Taking to press on Monday (June 22), ESSENCE has announced that Missy Elliott will take the stage during the 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture to lead a tribute to her longtime friend, collaborator, and fellow music icon.

The special performance – which not only comes 25 years after Aaliyah’s untimely passing but also in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of her landmark sophomore album ‘One in a Million’ – will celebrate the R&B princess’s life, career, and lasting impact on the culture. 

At writing, the full lineup of “special guest” performers to join Elliott has not been revealed.

The late singer’s brother, Rashad Haughton, expressed his gratitude for the upcoming tribute in a statement:

“Thirty-one years later, I am overcome with gratitude to the founders, artists, and the inimitable Missy Elliott for honoring my sister with this tribute, celebrating her life, art, and ongoing legacy,” he said.

Missy and Aaliyah shared one of the most influential partnerships in modern R&B history, collaborating on classics such as the album’s title track and ‘If Your Girl Only Knew.’

The 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture will take place in New Orleans from July 3–5.
