Mike Tyson says his legacy isn’t his boxing titles but the amateur showcase he’s building for young fighters, ahead of his second Mike Tyson Invitational.

Mike Tyson spent years waving off questions about his legacy, treating the whole conversation as an exercise in ego. That position appears to have shifted, and the thing he now points to has almost nothing to do with what he accomplished as a fighter.

Speaking with TMZ ahead of his second Mike Tyson Invitational at SAHARA Las Vegas, the former heavyweight champion said the amateur showcase, where hundreds of young fighters compete in front of trainers, scouts and Tyson himself, is what he hopes people attach his name to. “This is my legacy, God willing,” he said. “I want this to be my legacy.”

The turnout has clearly moved him. Tyson told the outlet that 350 kids signed up within a couple of hours this time around, a response he described as humbling. His stated goal is to lift amateur boxing back toward the standing it held when he came up through it in the early 1980s, a period when the amateur circuit was thriving in a way it simply isn’t now.

That decline is more than nostalgia talking. Tyson pointed to the sport’s precarious Olympic standing as evidence of how far things have slipped, framing the Invitational as an attempt to rebuild a pipeline rather than stage a photo opportunity.

He also made clear he’s thinking past his own involvement. “I want to keep going even when I’m no longer around,” he told TMZ, adding that since people place so much weight on the idea of legacy, this is the one he’d choose. He predicted the fighters coming through the event will see benefits they can’t yet anticipate, saying the experience is “going to change their whole life.”

For a man who became the youngest heavyweight champion in history and, for a stretch, the most feared athlete alive, the reframing is striking. Tyson seems entirely at peace with it, summing up his thinking in a line that leaves little room for interpretation, “Mike Tyson had his turn. It’s time for these young guys now.”
