Lizzo Says Fame Has Overshadowed Her Art Amid ‘B*TCH’ Album Underperformance

Lizzo is getting candid about the uneasy intersection of fame, criticism, and artistry.

In a hyper-frank new interview, the hitmaker opened up about how she feels public perception has reshaped the response to her music, specifically her latest album ‘B*TCH’.

The LP has already been the subject of much discussion after its soft commercial performance and the singer’s own emotional reflections on whether she had “failed.”

Speaking to The Guardian, Lizzo said her level of visibility has changed the way people engage with what she creates.

“You get to a level of fame and celebrity when your fame overshadows your art. And I’m there! Ha!

I never signed up to be just a famous person. I was always, like, I’m going to make art for ever. So when my fame precedes me as an artist it can be uncomfortable, because people care more about what I said than what I made.”

The GRAMMY winner also pushed back at the idea that the project’s more emotional songs are rooted solely in public controversy, saying some of the heartbreak came from private pain.

She reflected, saying:

“What people don’t know is that most of the sad songs on this album are about a friendship breakup that was not public at all.”

Elsewhere, the Houston native addressed the scrutiny that has followed her in recent years, while insisting she has reached a place of forward motion:

“Maybe it’s not behind the general public or the media, but it’s so behind me.”

As the chatter around ‘B*TCH’ continues, Lizzo is seemingly keen to participate in the discourse too.
