Kamala Harris keeps 2028 on the table while campaigning for Democrats in the midterms

The former vice president says the 2026 elections are “full-time occupying my thoughts, my mind and my work.”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has not decided whether she will seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. In the meantime, she is continuing to focus publicly on the 2026 midterm elections. CNN reports that Harris is maintaining her previously stated position that she is still “thinking about” another presidential campaign.

Harris has been making calls to political activists and candidates, discussing the 2024 campaign and offering advice, according to conversations cited by CNN. At the same time, she has not begun making the major policy speeches or donor introductions typically associated with launching a presidential campaign. In a recent podcast interview with Megan Rapinoe, Harris said her immediate focus remains the midterms. “Right now, midterms, midterms, midterms, full-time occupying my thoughts, my mind and my work.”

Her fall schedule is expected to include appearances for Democratic candidates in Michigan, Nevada and Georgia. CNN reported that she plans to campaign with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. She will also appear alongside Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, who is running for governor, and campaign with Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff. Harris also recently appeared by audio on an organizing call hosted by 1 Million Black Voters Rising for National Voter Registration Day.

Harris’ uncertainty is unfolding as several Democrats consider possible 2028 campaigns. California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he would not run if Harris decides to seek the presidency. “Of course not. Why would I?” Newsom said when asked whether he would run if Harris entered the race. Former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile said there is no immediate need for Harris to decide. She  suggested revisiting the question after the Nov. 3 general election.
