Directed by Bill Condon, the film is currently shooting in South Africa and centers on exiled trumpeter Hugh Masekela, played by Thabo Rametsi.

His journey unfolds against the controversy ignited by Paul Simon and the creation of his landmark 1986 album ‘Graceland.’ Johnny Flynn will take on the role of Simon.

The cast also features Cynthia Erivo as celebrated singer and activist Miriam Makeba, affectionately known as Mama Africa. Guy Pearce rounds out the ensemble as anti-apartheid campaigner Archbishop Trevor Huddleston.

Belafonte’s connection to Masekela and Makeba extended far beyond music. The late star helped finance Masekela’s studies and played an instrumental role in introducing Makeba to international audiences.

For Legend, the role is also deeply personal. Reflecting on the man he knew as both a friend and mentor, the singer shared:

“I was honoured to know Mr. Belafonte as my friend, mentor and collaborator in the struggle for justice. He was the epitome of an artist and activist who set a standard for me and so many others who stand on his shoulders.”

Adding further weight to the production, the filmmakers have secured access to the music catalogues of Simon, Masekela, and Makeba.

A release date for ‘The Road Home’ has yet to be announced.
