Jesy Nelson is celebrating a significant milestone after England confirmed that all newborn babies will be screened for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), marking a major step forward in the fight against the life-altering genetic condition.

The announcement arrives after months of campaigning from the former Little Mix star, whose twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, were diagnosed with SMA earlier this year. Since sharing their journey, Nelson has been candid about the emotional realities of the condition, which affects muscle strength, movement, breathing and swallowing.

Beginning in October 2026, newborns across most of England will receive the simple heel-prick test as part of a nationwide study before a full rollout is expected in 2027.

Reacting to the news, Nelson said:

“After years of campaigning, it means so much. Today is a day of hope. Knowing that future families will have access to early diagnosis and the opportunity for the best possible outcomes is something I’m incredibly proud to have supported. This is a victory for every family affected by SMA. Whilst it can’t change the future of our children, I know it marks the beginning of a brighter future for future SMA families.”
