Despite overwhelming fan demand, there has seemingly been little movement around Kelly Rowland finally bringing the Donna Summer story to life via an official biopic – a role the Destiny’s Child alum has repeatedly reiterated her interest in over the last decade.

And while her response to the incessant quizzing on the topic has been positive yet generally nondescript over the years, a recent chat with the press suggests there could be advancement toward getting the film to a screen sooner than later.

Rowland, reportedly hard-at-work on her fifth studio album (her first since 2013’s ‘Talk a Good Game‘), took time from the studio to shine a spotlight on her partnership with Lysol recently to promote their HERE for Healthy Schools: Quality Time Off Grant program in collaboration with the National Parent Teacher Association.

At a July 9 event, the GRAMMY winner caught up with ‘US Weekly’ and was quizzed on the status of a Donna biopic.

“I would love nothing more than that role. That’s all I can say. That’s all I can say for now,” Rowland told the mag before sharing. “I’m hoping you won’t be waiting long…All of us have our fingers crossed, toes crossed. We’re just totally crossed out.”

The tease comes as the latest news around the biographical film fans have long called for since the Queen of Disco’s death in 2012.

Just two years ago, Summer’s daughter – Brooklyn Sudano – confirmed a movie about her mom is “in the works,” but did not say if the ‘Motivation‘ singer would nab the titular role.

“Kelly and I are friends, so of course we have [spoken about my mom’s biopic],” Sudano said at the time. “I love Kelly. She is the best. So talented, so beautiful. We hear [the fans’ request for her to play my mom].”

There may still be much in the air regarding the future of the Donna film, but what’s for sure is the success of movies like ‘Michael‘ (the Michael Jackson story), ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere‘ (the Bruce Springsteen story), and ‘A Complete Unknown‘ (the Bob Dylan story) only reaffirms there is a strong appetite for biopics about music royalty.
