‘He loved his family more than anything’: Spelhouse love story takes heartbreaking turn after husband’s sudden cancer death at 34

Christian Davis-Smith died weeks after being diagnosed with Stage 4 renal medullary carcinoma, leaving behind his pregnant wife and son.

When Ariannah Hood and Christian Davis-Smith met in 2013 in Atlanta, he at Morehouse College and she across the way at Spelman College, the then-seniors could not have imagined the life and memories they would go on to build together. On August 8, 2020, the Spelhouse couple got married and began building their family in Arizona. However, fast forward 6 years, and life took a surprising turn. 

On Aug 18, 2026, Davis-Smith died after a sudden battle with Stage 4 Renal Medullary Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer that makes up less than 1% of kidney cancer diagnoses and is most common among young Black men with sickle cell trait or sickle cell disease. He had only been diagnosed weeks earlier, on July 11, just days after his 34th birthday. According to Davis-Smith’s family and friends, despite having a fully thought-out treatment plan, when doctors found a mass on his kidney, they took it as a sign that the cancer was spreading faster than expected. By August, the soon-to-be father of two’s breathing worsened, and he was hospitalized. Despite briefly coming home, Davis Smith was ultimately taken to the ICU. Unable to even start his treatment plan, he passed away peacefully. 

“He was tall, lanky, goofy, confident, loved video games and anime, listened to music most people had never heard of, and was completely comfortable being himself,” his loved ones wrote on a GoFundMe page. “Above all, he was a husband and father who loved his family more than anything.” 

Now, as the family grieves, Ariannah is also adjusting to a new reality. Working as a manager at Capital One while finishing his master’s in Business Administration, Davis-Smith was the household’s primary provider, managing bills, the mortgage, insurance, and more. Navigating this while also raising their son, Cameron, and preparing to give birth in a few months, Ariannah’s community has stepped up to do for her what she has spent her entire career as a therapist doing: helping others through difficult seasons. 

In light of Davis-Smith’s passing, they have launched a GoFundMe to give Ariannah and her sons the financial support needed for the upcoming months. The funds raised will be used to cover household expenses, bills, childcare, pregnancy and birth-related medical expenses, memorial costs, baby needs, and lost income as she takes time away from work.
