‘Fightland,’ ‘All-American,’ ‘The Odyssey’ Premiere, And The Films And TV Shows To Watch This Month

Summer has always been one of my favorite times to catch up on movies and television. Longer days make it easier to carve out time for a trip to the theater or settle in for a series you’ve been waiting months to see. Thankfully, July has delivered on both fronts.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has finally arrived after months of anticipation, while All American has begun its farewell season, giving longtime fans one last chance to spend time with characters they’ve followed for years. Meanwhile, there are several other premieres still on the horizon, including returning favorites and brand-new series that deserve a spot on your watchlist.

Whether you’re looking for a blockbuster, a crime drama or something you can binge over the weekend, here are the films and TV shows I’m watching this month.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan (STARZ)

Power Book III: Raising Kanan reaches its final chapter with Kanan Stark stepping further into the life fans know awaits him. Family loyalties are tested as Raq fights to hold onto her empire while a partnership with Breeze pushes Kanan toward decisions with lasting consequences.

All American: Season 8 (The CW)

All American returns for its eighth and final season by picking up six months after Beverly and Crenshaw’s championship showdown. Set during a single eventful week, the farewell season follows Jordan, Layla, Coop and the rest of the crew as long-held secrets force them to confront what comes next.

The Odyssey (Universal Pictures)

Lupita Nyong’o and Zendaya join an all-star cast in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with Tom Holland playing his son, Telemachus, as father and son embark on separate journeys years after the Trojan War.

Diarra From Detroit: Season 2 (BET | Premieres July 29)

Diarra Kilpatrick returns as Diarra Brickland, whose plans for an uncomplicated summer quickly disappear after a furniture recovery job turns into another dangerous investigation. Season two welcomes back familiar faces, including DomiNque Perry and Phylicia Rashad, while introducing another Detroit mystery packed with sharp humor and unexpected turns.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Sony Pictures | In theaters July 31)

Zendaya returns as MJ in the next chapter of Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, reuniting with Tom Holland after the emotional ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film also welcomes back Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and introduces Tramell Tillman in a mystery role as Peter Parker faces another challenge in a world that no longer remembers him.

Fightland (STARZ | Premieres July 31)

Howard Charles stars as a former boxing champion who returns to London after serving time in prison, convinced someone close to him destroyed his life. Deborah Ayorinde, Nicholas Pinnock and Anita-Joy Uwajeh co-star in the crime drama from executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, where revenge and family become impossible to separate.
