Dolly Parton is bringing her life story to the Broadway stage. Dolly: A True Original Musical will open at the St. James Theatre in New York City on January 19, 2027, which happens to be Parton’s 81st birthday.

Preview performances begin December 7. The show follows a sold-out world premiere run in Nashville that became the most successful production in the history of Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.

Bartlett Sher directs the production. The musical chronicles Parton’s journey “from the top of the Smoky Mountains to the top of the world,” according to the synopsis.

Parton’s biggest hits, ‘I Will Always Love You,’ ‘Jolene,’ ‘Coat of Many Colors,’ and ‘9 to 5‘, will make up the score. She also wrote new songs and co-wrote the book with Maria S. Schlatter.

Parton shared her excitement in a statement. She said:

“My whole life has been a musical. A grand ole opera really and I can’t wait to present it to you on Broadway. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I’ve enjoyed livin’ it.”

Casting has not yet been announced. Three actresses shared the role in Nashville, each depicting Parton at different stages of her life.

The show arrives after Parton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. She has sold over 100 million albums worldwide.
