‘Paint the Town Red‘ hitmaker Doja Cat is painting a vivid picture about the status of her mental health.

In a surprisingly candid chat with her fans on TikTok on Friday (March 13), the GRAMMY-winning rapper-singer – amid a discussion about Chappell Roan‘s headline-grabbing battles with paparazzi – revealed she’s been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD).

“I’ve learned from a very young age to pretend that I like stuff, to pretend that I’m happy, to pretend that I don’t like stuff that I do, to appear like everything is okay,” said Doja Cat (born Amala Dlamini). “I’ll get it done. And it caught up with me, and I think it always does for people. I’m now struggling with BPD.”

According to Mayo Clinic, BPD is currently affecting up to 14 million Americans and “includes a pattern of unstable, intense relationships as well as impulsiveness and an unhealthy way of seeing themselves” while “having extreme emotions and acting or doing things without thinking about them first.”

Doja says she’s taking the proper measures to treat the condition, however.

“I’ve been in therapy for years now, and I am so relieved and so proud of myself. I’ve made it so far, and I still make mistakes,” she said, also sharing she’s been “struggling” with BPD for “forever” and that the experience has been “agonizing.”

As for what the future looks like, the ‘Get Into It (Yuh)’ hitmaker is seemingly optimistic which is partly what encouraged her get into being more transparent about the diagnosis.

“I had to learn how to be honest with myself. I lied to myself for years, for most of my life, and to see her sit there, and I love it,” she said in reference to herself and Roan’s predicament. “I love that she can do that without hurting people…She hasn’t hurt one person by being herself, and that shows that I can do the same.”
