Ciara has become even more connected to her African roots after receiving citizenship from Benin.

Full story below…

In a ceremony Saturday (July 26), the ‘Goodies’ singer received a certificate of citizenship in the city of Cotonou. This was in part due to a recent law passed by Benin. The law is called the Afro-Descendant Citizenship Law and grants those who can trace their lineage to the slave trade citizenship.

The move forms part of Benin’s initiative to attract the Black diaspora, acknowledge the country’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, and promote tourism at slavery-related sites of remembrance.

Overcome with emotion, the ‘Ecstasy’ songstress expressed gratitude for her citizenship. She says:

“I feel incredibly proud. The significance of this moment is so special.”

Then, following the ceremony, the singer toured the historic city and walked to the Slave Route to the Door of No Return. She reflected on its history. She states:

“Between emotion, reflection and heritage, I experienced a profound return to what truly matters.”

Sindé Chekete, the head of Benin’s state-run tourism agency, feels these sites will help Afro-descendants learn and honor their ancestors.  Chekete expresses:

“It may inspire some people to say ‘I want to return to Africa and choose Benin to understand this history.”
