Chris Brown has publicly thanked U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett after the Texas Democrat helped recognize him and Usher during their Sept. 12 concert at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex., a gesture that has drawn backlash because of Brown’s long and controversial legal history.

Brown shared an image of the framed recognition on social media, thanking Crockett and Texas state Rep. Venton Jones for the honor. He also expressed appreciation to Texas for the reception he and Usher received during their joint R&B Tour stop.

“Wanna send a very special thank you @jasmineforus and @ventonjonestx for this honor! @roccstarmusic love you my brother. This means so much to me. Thank you TEXAS for showing me and @usher so much love and also @theonlyjasonlee thank you for your support when speaking with @donlemonofficial.”

Brown’s message followed criticism directed at Crockett over her decision to participate in the recognition, with some critics arguing that a public official should not celebrate an artist with Brown’s record of past violence and legal disputes. Crockett has not publicly addressed the backlash.

The presentation was not a traditional award. Crockett said she wanted to place the artists’ contributions to music and entertainment into the Congressional Record. During the appearance, she described the moment as an expression of “Black joy” and praised Brown before presenting the recognition.

Jones separately presented Brown with an official State of Texas legislative recognition. In a post about the event, Jones said the honors recognized Brown’s lasting impact on music and credited producer RoccStar with helping coordinate the effort.

The controversy centers largely on Brown’s 2009 felony assault case involving then-girlfriend Rihanna. Brown pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation, community labor and domestic-violence counseling. His career continued to grow despite the case, but additional legal controversies have followed over the years.

Most recently, Brown pleaded guilty in the United Kingdom in July to a lesser charge of affray stemming from a 2023 nightclub incident involving music producer Abraham Diaw. He is scheduled to be sentenced in October.

Crockett’s recognition therefore landed in a particularly sensitive context. Supporters can point to Brown’s enormous influence on contemporary R&B, while critics argue that his musical accomplishments should not be separated from his history of violence.

Brown, for his part, chose to focus on the significance of the honor. His public response thanked Crockett, Jones and Texas rather than addressing the criticism.

The episode has also revived a broader debate over the role of elected officials in celebrating entertainers whose careers remain commercially successful despite serious controversies.
