Britney Spears‘ biopic is taking shape. 

Over a year after ‘Wicked‘ director Jon M. Chu confirmed a biographical film about the Pop princess was in the works, reports have surfaced ‘New Girl’ creator Liz Meriwether has been tapped to write the screenplay for it.

Under Chu’s direction, Meriwether will pen the script and Marc Platt will produce the Universal film. The movie is based on Spears’ revealing 2023 autobiography, ‘The Woman in Me,’ which sold over 1.1 million copies in its first week.

Universal landed the rights to the memoir in late 2024, and Spears shared news of the “secret project” herself at the time – writing that Platt has “always made my favourite movies.”

Meriwether is a WGA winner for her work on ‘Dying for Sex‘ and the Hulu limited series ‘The Dropout.’

Her breakthrough came in 2011 with the romantic comedy ‘No Strings Attached’ and the creation of the classic comedy ‘New Girl’ which ran for seven seasons.
