Clive Davis, the towering music executive who helped shape the careers of Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, and many more, has died.

The legendary label boss passed away Monday (June 22) at his home in New York City.

He was 94.

Davis’ longtime rep confirmed that he “passed away peacefully from age-related illness” while surrounded by loved ones.

His passing comes just weeks after a health scare saw him hospitalized in New York with an upper respiratory issue. At the time, Davis was later released and said to be “in good spirits” while recuperating at home.

Across a career that stretched seven decades, Davis became one of the most influential figures in modern music. After rising to president of Columbia Records in the 1960s, he went on to found Arista Records and J Records, helping steer landmark eras for artists across Pop, Rock, R&B, Soul, and Hip-Hop.

Davis was also known for his famed annual pre-Grammy gala, a star-packed industry institution that became almost as anticipated as music’s biggest night itself.

His legacy lives on through the artists, albums, and careers he helped bring to the world.
