According to TMZ, Boosie’s lawsuit alleges the two men convinced him they had the connections to persuade Trump to approve his pardon request once payment was made. The rapper claims he wrote a $600,000 check under the belief that the pardon would be delivered.
Boosie is now seeking to recover $300,000, arguing that the original agreement included a clause requiring half of the fee to be refunded if the pardon was not obtained. Wohl and Burkman reportedly argue that the refund clause was never part of the final contract.
Burkman responded to the allegations, saying:
“Boosie has no reason to be unhappy. In 30 years of lobbying, I doubt we have ever done more work or harder work. The provision in the contract he is referencing was never agreed to at all. The other factor is that Boosie’s quest for a pardon was made much tougher by an arrest for an alleged crime of violence in Texas earlier this year. We tried very, very hard.”
The White House has also denied that Wohl or Burkman played any role in the presidential pardon process, stating that the clemency office never heard from either man.
The lawsuit comes with another layer of legal turmoil. Many have noted that exchanging money or anything of value in an attempt to obtain a presidential pardon could potentially violate federal bribery laws, depending on the facts and circumstances. Boosie has not been charged with any crime related to the alleged payment.
Boosie’s original pardon request stemmed from his federal gun possession case, for which he was sentenced to time served and later released.
